Network Marketing Start Up Opportunities - Risks and Rewards

Network marketing - The Right Timing

We've all heard the saying "Timing is everything!" And the goal in life is "to be at the right place at the right time" and I would add to that last quote "with the right attitude".

But what is the right time? "Hindsight is 20-20" is another famous saying. It is pointing out that it's often easier to see the opportunity AFTER it's passed us by. So how do we know opportunity BEFORE other people do while the profit to be made is the largest it's going to get?

The network marketing industry abounds with inducements to "get in now before it's too late!" Meaning before everyone else jumps on the bandwagon before you do and you have no one left to market to - otherwise known as "saturation".

Network Marketing Business Start Up

But before a company saturates its market, it has to have been a Ground Floor Start Up Business Opportunity. It began with a small but enthusiastically determined cadre of core members often called "founders". These founders all shared a vision of what was to come and became distributors when there was practically nothing to go on but sheer imagination and faith.

The stories are enthralling about the pioneers in our network marketing industry going from zero to hero with a break through company. That's part of the reason people think of Network Marketing as pyramids; because the core people at the beginning get so wealthy when those joining later have a tougher time and don't make nearly a fraction of that wealth.

So getting in at the beginning has a lot of appeal. A lot!!

But it also has many headaches and pitfalls to it, as well.

High Risk Investment

First of all, it's high risk. Sometimes of your wallet, but mostly of your time. Your time is your most valuable asset and you are betting your time, and fervent energy, towards a goal that sometimes no one else sees but you. The first amount of time you are going to invest is going to be doing your homework investigating the network marketing business itself - is it right for you? Then more time is involved because it's NEW, people are even more reticent about joining with you because no one's ever heard of it.

So, it's a greater time investment in just familiarizing the customer with the IDEA of the product and the company. Ideally, the greatest opportunity lies with a product that's NEW but that the public "gets" right away so there isn't a lot of time invested in this education process.

But usually a start up business opportunity product is new and requires a lot of education of the public about it's benefits and features and why they would WANT it. THEN why they would want to be the FIRST to have it, and THEN why YOU should be the person they want it from. So again, a lot of time investment.

New Business Growing Pains

Another downside, is the growing pangs of the company. Network marketing companies are particularly susceptible to the growing pains of growing too large too fast and not being able to handle the business. Both from a product availability standpoint and a compensation standpoint (sometimes the computers get fried.) And fried computers means no paychecks (commissions). A definite problem.

Again, ideally you want a network marketing company that has brought some experienced business people on board to control the behind the scenes operations and who have plenty of integrity and money so they don't run off to Tahiti with the payroll.

Also, these growing pains mean things will change a bit before settling down to the final version of the compensation plan, marketing strategy, and product line. So this in-flux transition period can be a bit flustering when you're trying to present the products or the comp plan to prospects because it could change on a moment's notice.

By its definition, a start up company is NOT STABLE. It's growing like a baby and will be wobbly a bit as it gains strength. You have to be willing to ride out these changes and growing pains and keep an eye on the goal you got so enthused about to begin with.

Millionaires Take Educated Risks

The rewards of being involved in a start up ground floor business opportunity could literally make you a millionaire. Or it could leave you flat, with little credibility among your circle, if it fails from any one of the pitfalls mentioned here. It is HIGH RISK. If it succeeds, those that didn't get in with you, will be shaking their heads and saying "If only I had known!"

Hindsight is indeed 20-20 and being at the right place at the right time requires being willing to step out in faith, imagine your rewards, and BE SMART about who you're investing your time with.

If you can weather the changes, and ride out the problems along with the company and everybody makes it to the other side of the shore intact then you too could become one of the legends in Network Marketing that saw a good thing when it came to you. You will be one of the ones that lived the saying Timing IS everything... and you were READY.

Hi Lisa,

You have written an excellent article on the reasons and pitfalls of joining a startup company. I appreciate the insights you give. I've been hearing a lot about this company and it may be the next millionaire builder. I've chosen to work with a 52 year old pioneer in the health and wellness field, myself because it has a proven track record, well known scientists on staff, millions of $$ in R&D, an awesome new product that no one else will be able to replicate, and leadership that will take us around the globe to make our planet a better place.

All the best,

Theresa
